I have created a new thread in the Rules: Queries & Questions section, I would be grateful if any further discussion regarding whether or whether not characters can challenge in the first round of combat could be discussed in the new thread.

By the way, I just found an intersting quote from that "out-of-topic" discussion that gives us some interesting hints here Wink :

Well, when you think about it, it is even logical ( I mean fluff there )

A model that isn't engaged is potentially not in range for being hit. It makes then sence not to take its WS value in consideration.

It was even better before the FAQ, where halberd-armed GK's struck at I6 but could not attack because they only piled in at I4. Very Happy

I never understood that arguement... you clearly piled-in at your modified In... and to say you didnt even before the FAQ was stupid to begin with...

The argument was simply that Halberds only modified the Initiative that you attacked at. Nothing else. It was stupid but it was RAW (which GW should have as their company motto).

understandable, but Im guessing the same people that thought that thought that a SM sargie w/ powerfist steped up at I4, and didnt hit until In 1... you cant have it both ways you know

Yes, that's exactly how it worked. The annoying thing is that the rules could be so clear but GW has this unrelenting urge to frak things up by writing them in stupid ways.
