1k Footdar Vs FootWolves
I managed to set up a game for this week, mostly because I had said I would play a test list last week and didn’t.

So I took the Foot list from a while back.
2 Haems
2 x20 Warriors, 2 SC
2 x3 Trueborn, 2 DL
2 Taloi, 1 w/Twinlinked Liquifiers, 1 w/Chailflails
1 Cronos, w/ Vortex

He brought 3 Squads of wolves, If memory serves, each had 2 meltas in them. A specialist guy who was in effect Sgt. Wolven.
A Rune Priest
2 Long Fangs squads of 6 Missile Launchers.

He won deployment/terrain/turn.

First thing he did was snatch that nice tower and stick it as far back in his DZ as he could… I grabbed the who booth, because according to all my buddies… yeah that phone booth totally fits 20 guys! The rest of terrain was not in my favor. He got the ruins after sticking me with the tanks, but mostly because I was not paying enough attention when he said (much earlier, so it’s not his fault, I just wasn’t paying attention) that the box lid was Area cover, man that would a been nice.
Anyway I attempted to seize… ‘1’ and the 'luck' starts.

His turn 1, he kills the cronos right off the bat, the cover did not help in any way shape or form… Puts some other wounds around, I retaliate, or attempt to. On the whole very little happens in my favor.

Turn 2 his priest uses the ground to eat 4 members of the warrior squad, including their haem. He shoots up the chain flail Talos, it dies, cover did nothing… I shoot back, Moving the warriors up to rapid fire, my fingers tingling with the joy of so many rapid fire shots, the talos unleashes a torrent of vile death… and it seems we’ve just given the marines a nice acid wash, cleaning their armor and being all nice to them..? Well all the better for my warriors to mow them down while they look at the peak of pristine right? So a hefty torrent of 38 shots! 7 HIT!? 3 Wound!? All are saved! WHAT DICE CHEATERY IS THIS!? The trueborn at the top take out a longfang, splinter cannons deal out a few marines and a dark lance vaporizes another.

Turn 3 another warrior succumbs to the jaws of the very earth beneath him. The long fangs make short work of the last talos, shooting knocks out a few more warriors, and the 2 darklances at the northern end are reduce to minestrone soup. I send the 20 warriors out of the booth after another chance to torrent out a squad. They at least kill SOMETHING…

Turn 4 Combat continues more warriors die, but as the down side to rolling low all game is fails kills, the upshot is passed leadership tests. The last trueborn from the northern end eats a round of missiles. The marines to the south march up and charge, overwatch gets one. Combat removes more warriors, they break on my turn and start running off.

Turn 5 sees the end of the northern combat. The Rune Priest start marching south. The marines catch the fleeing squad, overwatch is ineffective. Combat ensues, the Warriors loose and break again, this time with a Haem and a warrior remaining, as the last trueborn team is removed in a hail of missile fire.

So lessons learned... 1 don't leave home without a ride. 2 pay more attention to terrain... 3 get better dice?

Yeah, never taking that list again.

Ouch, that was brutal. Well I'm glad you took the bullet for us, and went out there and tried this (saves us all a painful learning experience).

Things I learned from this:

1. Don't roll dice badly. Very Happy

2. Don't let your opponent use all the good terrain. Very Happy

3. You can't overwhelm the enemy with just two squads of Warriors.

Can't make much a determination on the Warrior hordes beyond that because of the first two. In general, the more chances you have to shoot and the more bodies you have to take saves with, the more dependable your results should be, but variance still happens yeah?

Ouch...

What i learned by fighting marines is that Splinter Fire is not that great against them; you get way more out of dissies and DL than you do from splinter. Plus a foot list against SW is just mean, long fangs... nuff said. You might have gotten a better chance with Wyches.

Drop a heami and warrior squad and get yourself something like Reavers to go mow them down quickly Wink

I wouldn't give up on the list though, those were horrible rolls you were given.

Having looked over the report againg, you should have kept your forces together, and tried to keep the pain engines out of sight first turn. I also really liked the way you drew the jaw of the world wolf as a fissure in the ground. Many vat-born died that day... Very Happy

Honestly outside of a Duke reserve last minute "Oh hey, sorry we're late, our raiders broke down on the side of the road, but don't worry baby, I'll still save you!" 20 man team, I doubt I really try the foot thing again. I play DE for the speed, playing with slower models was like fencing left-handed and I am not left-handed.

I would love to see some of these ideas expounded upon and tried if someone is up to taking a go at it. As it stand I've got either 500pt 4 way brawl, or 1k with either the hellions list I drafted a while back, or the Scourge list I'm hammering out now, though a traditional "comfortable" raider rush would be a nice return to home base (you know, get a clean win to feel good again).

I certainly have plenty of Warriors sitting around (like 120+ if I break out the old-school ones). Maybe I'll try to throw a list together that will work. I wish I had more beasts, cause a few units of those would make wicked vanguards to take the pressure off the Warrior lines.

Rippers make good "Count as Razorwings Flocks" I toyed with a beast pack in there as well, but went against it as I just don't like the thought behind beasts (feels too WFHB and I can get snobby Wink ). I suspect the Warrior squads would benefit from a few CC units that could tie up some of the shooting that is staring them down.

That game sounds brutal, you were unlucky to lose your big gribbly monsters so quickly. Just one thing though - I don't think the fleeing warrior squad that got caught are allowed to overwatch. Don't they just test to see if they regroup? And then they're destroyed if they don't? I could be wrong, I don't have the rulebook to hand.

There squad can be 5-6 models, but yes only 5 can hold launchers.

One thing to remember about space wolve is that you can't play against them like you would normal marines (the same way you shouldn't play them like normal marines as I have learnt). They are extremely deadly at close range and will love to get in a fight (not caring really who charges). I don't think wyches would have done much better against them, other then lasting slightly longer in cc. One important thing to remember is that SW will most likely get 3 attacks each the first round of combat. This coupled with their good WS will cut through alot of guys (a 4+ invul is still just a 4+).

You definitely want vehicles against wolves (especially footslogging wolves) one of their main weaknesses is that the are slow and can't maneuver easily. Also your main threat will probably be the Long fans, so if you can eliminate them ASAP.

I'm surprised you lost so many to Jaws considering the high initiative of DE.
