Quote :
GK
1x Coteaz
1x10 interceptors
4x3 warriors w/ psyback (2x2 flamers)
2x psyfledread

IG
1x CCS w/ 4 plasmaguns in chimera
2x10 veterans w/ 3 flamers in chimera
1x PCS w/ 4 flamers
2x9 Guardsman w/ autocannon
1x vendetta
1x medusa
1x manticore
Both of these lists look remniniscent of the power level that we are capable of honestly. I just started playing 1k games again recently after years of higher level play and I gotta say its a cut throat business at that level.
That said and even considering sparse terrain (which I think breaks a vital mechanic of game and army design) I still feel pure DE have the tools to beat either list, with much hinging on who goes first due to lack of terrain. If you dont mind elaborating, were you bringing similarly tooled up lists or more friendly level? One strength he has over DE is mech spam which can be hard to deal with at 1k with DE ive found.

I think the fact that the board is 4x4 (rather than 6x4) is more of a challenge than the terrain. But then again I like space to manoeuvre.

No your dead on I just forgot to reference that as well. Honestly with appropriate terrain even a 4x6 board can get a little cramped at times. IDK maybe its just were I play but we run the full 25% or more terrain and nearly always with at least 5-6 LoS blocking pieces and usually a massive centerpiece... more like cities of death actually. Love it.
IMO poor terrain and even bad placement of good terrain (say more for advantage then to create good battles with strategic options) can really detract from a gaming environment. Also many units that would otherwise be borderline become very viable with proper terrain.

I used to play in tournaments when I was younger, and I did very well in the last tournament I played in with DE.

However, I think the success of a DE player is more determined on the table, mission and match-up than any other race. Kill Points, for example, is something that DE just inherently suck at, since most of our units are fragile as crap and the transports used to carry them are basically made out of paper. The table also matters a lot because if you're playing on an open field vs. something like IG, you should basically gg out and not bother playing. You need 25% with a good variety of line of sight blockers to make a substantial difference in that matchup. Lastly, the matchup itself: A Venomspam army will 20-0 almost any Tyranid army, really. Then you look at the same list and you draw Mechdar with 6x Wave Serpents and WWs and you basically gg out because there's nothing you can do. You have 1-2 rounds before your entire army dies essentially.

This is why tournaments are hit and miss, and why there's some DE players that place high, and some that don't, even if they're the same caliber player.
