| Question cropped up in a recent game...
Do we have to declare what is in each transport...
Secondly if we do... do we declare at the start or do we have to answer whenever asked...
The thought behind this was a friends forces we're marked up vehicle to troops in a way only he knew... he did however at the end of the game show me this so I knew he hadn't cheated me..
Is this a legit method or do we declare when ever asked?? Seems a nice idea for tournaments if it is, howevr lame it may be, we are after all devious pirates

| You're not playing warhammer battle, so if your opponent wants you to schow your list, then you've got to do it.
It's not an obligation to describe your army in detail at the begining of the game if not asked, but personnaly, i do it. I think it instores a good mood around the table.
I've already seen a tournament using hided lists, but it turned out to be an open door for cheaters.

| I find it best to just place one model from a unit on top of a certain transport and that should take care of any confusion. | |

| You have to share your lists and declare what's in your transports. This isn't a shell game. | |

| I'm pretty sure the rules dont demand list sharing before the game, but I put a model on the vehicle sufficient to identify the squad. I've played games where two units have left a transport and I've played games where I forgot who was in what vehicle | |

| Actually the rules dont demand list sharing (just encourage it) but do state to declare units in transport, pg 121: Deploying Transport Vehicles.
Personally I take the opportunity to pimp rides as a way of showing who is in what transport.

| 'A Note on Secrecy: To keep things fair, you should always allow your opponent to read your force roster after a game and always make it clear to your opponent which squads are embarked in which Transports. However, before deploying armies, agree whether or not you will read the opponent's force roster during the game as well.' p. 118 | |

| Like Brom said you can't hide what's in a transport though. Even in a closed list environment (which is very rare in 40k), as the rules specifically state that you need to declare which unit is in which transport. | |

| Our group has been at it for soo long that there is a great amount of trust and respect within it. We house rule it that you don't have to show what's in your transports or what's in reserve. It's just that much more fun to be surprised when you A) completely destroy a transport and the 'elite' unit your opponent was hoping to spring on you. B) Ignore a transport for too long until it's too late and a squad of Chosen or Terminators pop out on your lines. C) Be able to showcase the unit you've been working on in secrecy by holding it in reserve. D) Rocket forward an stripped down empty transport into enemy lines to cause panic. We have a lot of fun doing it this way. At the same time though, we all would and do share our lists when asked for any reason. If you trust your opponent, give it a whirl.

| How do Dark Eldar do it? Surely the enemy can see whether there are grots/wyches/warriors in a raider, after all they are open topped! | |

Night Shields should definitely let you hide who is in the transport, that would be amusing.

| If you don't model the driver on the raiders then you have plenty of room to put a model from the unit riding in it at that spot.
I tend to not model the gunners on venoms for this same reason. The splinter cannon is there, but I put a trueborn on the back so both my opponent, and I, know what's what.
It's just far simpler for me to remember exactly what is where when I can visually see the models. Same with vehicle damage. My weapons and sails are all magnetized so I can pull them off when certain damage results are rolled. Finally, my units are actually color coordinated with their transports. This means my army is pretty colorful (blues, reds, tan, black, ...) , but it is absolutely apparent which transport goes with which units.

| I mount the banner from the warriors onto one model per unit and paint the same symbol on the transport. I then put one model (without banner) on said transport. That way, my opponent knows if it's warriors/wyches/trueborn but don't know exactly what those units contain whilst I will know which unit's where. | |
