And the final Incubi are done!

The three last models.

Two regular Incubi. The last one will get some Water effect on the base, but it takes so long to dry, and I wanted to post the finished models.

A Klaivex. It took quite some work to change the apperence of an Incubi model, since they are really only made for one pose. Since removing your helmet is the universal sign of leadership in the 40k universe, a helmetless head was a must. The face paint was inspired by the fact that, according to really old background, eldar aspect warriors use warpaint underneath their helmets. And Incubi are quite similar to the aspect warriors of our misguided kin.

I also wanted to change the pose in some way, but realised that it would be difficult if he was to hold the klaive in two hands. However, holding a large, twohanded weapon in one hand might work for a space marine, but it looks really strange on a dark eldar. Holding it in a rested pose against the shoulder or ground might have worked, but then I could not paint lightning on the blade (since he wouldn't hold it like that when it was activated). But then it finally occured to me - he could hold it in the other hand, by the alternate grip. That way, it looked really balanced and he could easily grab the normal handle with his other hand when he was about to stirke the enemy he's looking at.

A WIP-shot of the Klaivex.

And finally - the entire unit:

Wonderful Incubi, what can I say! Your Klaivex is especially well done! While I might personally disagree about unhelmeting Incubi, the faceless, cold and silent killers in my eyes, I absolutely love the pose - it's as if he has been frozen in the middle of the dance of death, where his beloved and graceful lady is none other than his very own favourite Klaive, fresh from the falling corpse of yet another foolish opponent that didn't run when he had the chance.

The group shot is magnificent, it's a very impressive unit!

I'm not a fan of an inccubi without a helm, but still, the model looks great. very well painted!

and really fine effect on the klaives.

The Incubi raider is done!

My take on the Obsidian rose - Page 5 Raider08_zps3ecec52d
My take on the Obsidian rose - Page 5 Raider09_zpsf21a2ff7
Since this was the last vehicle I have planned for the imminent future, I hade to think a bit about which of my ideas for freehand designs would get a spot in the army and which would have to wait.

My take on the Obsidian rose - Page 5 Raider10_zpsb4073e6a
The helmets of the Incubi are quite special, with their sculpted ears and horns. I imagine this is not some random thing whoever crafted the helmets put there, but rather that they are sculpted in the likeness of some kind of mythological beein och prehaps some daemonic creature that the Dark eldar have encountred in a dimension somewhere. So I started to think about what this creature would look like. How could you "reverse engineer" the different aspects of an Incubus warsuit into an organic being?

I am a bit torn about the result. From a technical standpoint it turned out well. But I think that the composition of the picture could have been better. I should have "zoomed in" more, so that I could show more details. And perhaps added some background. Due to the small size of the picture I could not add enough details to the face for example. But then again, one can always think of things to improve when something is done.

My take on the Obsidian rose - Page 5 Raider11_zps27faab9f
With this picture I wanted to show a feeling more then anything else. I wanted that disturbing Hellraiser-ish look that I associate with the Dark eldar. The idea is stolen from some Hellraiser fan art I found online.

So, what do you think?

The Raider looks fantastic! The freehand Incubus on the side looks a bit tiny - that, or there needs to be some more stuff going on there for my eye, whether it's some background or more figures. Seems a little bit empty otherwise.

With that said, it still looks fantastic, and the work on the sail is great! Well done.

Thank you!

@Situcis: You are right. I got a comment about it on another forum as well and decided that I will try to add some background. Right now the model is at my gaming club, but I'll hopefully be able to fix it next weekend.

A small update.

My take on the Obsidian rose - Page 5 Dewar15_zpsa89da635
Some extra warriors to fill the points for an upcoming tournament.

And then I fixed the raider nose art.
My take on the Obsidian rose - Page 5 Raider12_zpsb66ffe23

At first I thought about different backgrounds to add, but all but the most simple ones were made difficult by the texture on the hull. But then it occured to me that I should try to incorporate the hull design into the picture rather then working against it. And then everything fell into place. I think the modified version works much better then the original image. The portal frames the image, explains the size of the figure and also adds to the story behind it. The incubi creature was apperently something that lived in another dimension and traveled to this world by some kind of portal, probably a long time ago and possibly even before The fall.

Sorry to wake an old thread, but after a long break I've finally painted something Dark eldar! This time it's a Chronos parasite engine.

My take on the Obsidian rose - Page 5 Chronos03_zps4cd7f424
I really love this model. Such a great kit.

My take on the Obsidian rose - Page 5 Chronos02_zpscc5b7f80
The only thing I don't like is the original Spirit vortex upgrade. It looks really bad and makes no sense. So I needed some other way of showing that I'd taken that upgrade. And since the Chronos can only take one ranged weapon apart from its starting one, I figured some sort of gun would make it obvious. After all, what looks more like an upgrade that gives a ranged attack - a forward-mounted cannon or a force shield stuck in the models rear end?

My take on the Obsidian rose - Page 5 Chronos01_zps5e967830
I kept the model in the same colours as the rest of the army, but marked it with the symbol of the coven from which it was aquired - The Hex.

A wonderful Cronos and a great alternative to the Spirit Vortex - I am not a fan of the original piece either, always found it tad too tacky. Your solution has elegance fitting to a creation of a haemonculus! Good to see you posting again!

Sorry for the lack of updates (again). When 7th ed arrived and GW basically gave a large middle finger to all background ever written (Eldar being able to summon Slaaneshi daemons, Ultramarines bein able to ally with Tyranids and so on) I kinda lost intrest in 40k for a while. But after a break and a few friendly games at my club I got back into painting. And now I finally finished something!

My take on the Obsidian rose - Page 5 Baron02_zps7bca4c12
My take on the Obsidian rose - Page 5 Baron01_zps549a32bb
My take on the Obsidian rose - Page 5 Baron03_zpse6c03acb
Baron Sathonyx.
Unfortunately it's quite hard to get a decent photo of him since the entire model is based around a sense of motion and dynamics, but that´s much easier to see in reality. Anyway, I really happy with him.
I thought quite a while about what I should paint on his skyboard. I wanted it to look like a special skyboard that had been given lots of care, but I didn't want some freehand image that stole attention from the Baron himself. In the end I settled for this golden pattern which I think makes him look a bit more "regal" then the rest of my hellions. A funny thing about it is that it did not start out looking like that. When I started painting I realised that the design I chose did not really work that well with the shape of the board. So I added some stuff to it.
Also note the bones of the seer in that last picture.

My take on the Obsidian rose - Page 5 Hellions22_zpsff21225a
My take on the Obsidian rose - Page 5 Hellions23_zps24eac1cb
And a "normal" hellion. With the Baron I need a bigger unit. The pattern on her board is one that I thought about for the Baron. I liked the pattern itself but didn't think it would look right for him, so I used it on another board instead.

My take on the Obsidian rose - Page 5 Hellions21_zps753189f0
And yet another hellion. Simple though the freehand on this board may be I was surprised by how well it worked.
