So, that Esc league I mentioned? So far yours truly is in the lead. Undefeated, and ahead of the next closes player by a mere two points, I have only one other undefeated opponent left (and in the Swiss style our TO is using, he's my guaranteed matchup next week).

So here's the thing: he plays Tau. Specifically, Drone-Commander Tau. I know he's added some Broadsides (and made mention of snipers, although that might be a smokescreen). No vehicles so far of any kind.

This week, I'm adding a Ravager. I had planned to run it as a Lance variant. Now, I'm tempted to field the Ravager as a disintegrator variant with Night Shields (in order to F over the battlesuits all over the place), but I'm concerned I might be making a bad choice. (Since the pts will be the same, I can still run it as a Lance version in later weeks.) I already have four units of warriors with a blaster, a unit of grots, a unit of reavers with caltrops, and two scourge units (one heatlance, one haywire blaster), so I thought I might be covered on the vehicle front.

Thoughts? Should I stick with my original Lance plan, or go with the dissies?

What toughness do his suits have? 4: take lances. On the other hand... If he uses drones as meat shields, you should not take the lances.

His commanders take huge clouds of drones so he can drop in and fire them at BS5. That's the whole shtick.

Vs a Tau list (without vehicles, assuming he doesnt buy any), the Dark Lances have the advantage of ID. They wound on a 2+ against everything, and can do some additional damage if he DOES bring vehicles.

The Dissies fire 3x as many shots. They wound on a 3+. They still penetrate everybody's armor. And in the event of a Jinking gunboat, they dramatically increase my odds of still being able to do some damage.

If he's using so many drones as meat shields, I wouldn't take lances. Sure, you can take those out with poison weapons, but sometimes a big volley of DS2 fire is just what it takes. And think about it that way:
Your competitors surely have several laser canons or something similar to lances. Did it help? No. But they don't have 9 shots DS2 from one vehicle.

What about mixing, 2 Dark lances with 1 Disintegrator or 2 disintegrators and 1 dark lance? First option gives you 5 shots, three with the Disintegrator and 2 with the Lances. If you go with 2 disintegrators and a single lance you have 7 shots. Resolve disintegrator shots first to thin the number of drones?

What is "huge cloud" ?

I think you should start with cleaning the cloud with you venoms and THEN, strike him with dark energy. So, I'll say lance ravager. The firsts turns, you can one shot few crisis suits while you poison his drones (sic!). And then, switche targets.

The odds of the Ravager being around to hit the commanders are miniscule. It's likely going to be a high priority target, due to its mass AP 2 fire or ID capacity. Barring lucky jinks, I don't see it surviving past turn 3.

The traditional Tau strategy with drone-mander is to run the commander with a drone controller and two drones of his own attached to a maximum unit of fast attack drones. (I think max size is 12?) Then you Deep Strike them.

Turn 1 I plan to use the Ravager against the Broadsides. My prediction is that this will make them Public Enemy number 1 when the Commanders arrive.
