I'm trying not to think about it too much - just finishing off my reavers first, but at 20 minutes per layer of canopy highlights, they're not looking like being much quicker! Still, managed to get my transport pool assembled and mostly undercoated this weekend, that's 4 more raiders in addition to the one I've already painted and three venoms. At the speed I paint I might be done by the time 7th edition comes out!

| Luv'ly finished model ESE. It is such a great vehicle to begin with and paint jobs like yours just make it almost impossible to resist! I remember the gems - I did them fairly quick and easy, but they still took a long time due to their sheer number. But get them right, and it's definitely worth it. Looking forward to the Void Raven when it finally hits the shelf? | |

| Hmmm. Interesting.
I agree with you ESE, live and learn. Following what you were trying to do and what you have achieved, the result is disappointing.
Not to say that the model is bad, far from it. It has a certain effect that is eye catching and interesting, I only say disappointing in that you did not, in my opinion, achieve the effect you wanted.
I can see where the colors changed slightly and I did notice the highlight effect diminished. It still looks very good.
On what I do like, the highlights on the details are very nice and the teal looks incredibly good against the purple, normally it looks pretty sad, but you have pulled those colors off masterfully.
The gems look to have a bit too much white on the ends, but in the full view of the model, I think they are just right. if they were done correctly from an up close view, they would look incomplete or too dark from a wider view. Nice touch there.
The gold on the weapons is understated and subtle, which is nice given that they do not detract from the jet fighter itself, they just complement it.
Its a quibble, but, the lighting source for the jems is not the same as for the entire vehicle. I love the single reflective light line on the engines and the weapon housing, but they don't match the jems source light.
I liked the shading you had before the clear layer was applied. It happens sometimes that clear layers dull or blend the colors together somewhat. That same thing cost me a Gold Demon and Sword contention. Its a painful lesson to learn.
The pilot is very nice looking. I like how much detail was put into him.
Overall, very well done.

| Proof of life more than any real progress: I'm slowly pecking away at the last five Hellions for the Baron's gang. With the crazy teaching and grad schedule I won't be getting all that much done, but I do look forward to getting some major painting in mid-July Sadly, I haven't had the time to even try the Baron out after finishing him in round one of the Archon's Challenge | |

| Glad to hear you're still alive! how many in the baron's circus, I seem to recall a fairly large chunk of hellions done for the troops section of the challenge! | |

| 9 were completed in the challenge. These and three more that I've started will make 14 total. If I play the Baron and the unit and really get a kick out of them I may do more...but they are really kind of a pain in the rear to paint. | |

| ....and two more: I have three more to paint after this weekend's graduation shenanigans. Kinda shameful that these two are all that I've painted in two weeks I plan on finishing the gang and waiting for 6th edition to come out to make sure that I'm not painting anything that now sucks.. | |

| I meant to go to bed awhile ago, but after all the help and kind words you've given me on my work, I felt like a bit of a jerk for having not really looked at yours...
It's fantastic! I love the way your color scheme has come together on pretty much every model. I love purple for Dark Eldar! The greens/blues/yellows you use all work wonderfully with it and it's obvious you love working on this army. I am certainly jealous of your skill, but I feel like I've really been advancing over the past year or two.
I am a bit envious of your airbrush, but I still haven't been able to find the money for one just yet. I can't wait to see more of your models as you get them done and I would love to see a full army shot when the time comes.
Keep up the excellent work and thanks for all the advice and encouragement you have been giving me.

| No problem BD! I really do love this army and have learned to love painting again. Your stuff is looking quite awesome, and I'm sure that after painting for 24 years or so you're stuff will look much better than mine! (I've been at it since the RT days; my stuff should look better than it does! Your painting will certainly take less time to get where you want it!) I'll have some pics up later of my completed Hellions. After picking up my copy of the 6th edition rules I will decide if I want to dive into making my Corsair allies for this list this July. That Yriel model is just screaming for a head swap and some cosmetic changes to make a fine Corsair Captain/Autarch | |

| Yeah, I started with Games Workshop back in 2000, but have been painting minis since the late 90's, so it's hard to say how long I've been at it.
You've been painting models for about as long as I've been alive!
I don't feel like I got very serious about it until the past year or so, but I think the change in attitude definitely shows.
Do you just play 40k, or do you mess with other games as well (GW or otherwise)?

40K(Tau, SM,SW, CWE, DE, IG), WHFB (HE's, Empire, Oger Kingdoms), Flames of War (Soviets), and Warmahordes (Cryx, Menoth, Trolls). Too much crap really Just ordered some Eldar Corsair stuff as allies! The LFGS is doing an escalation league starting next week at 500pts. I am getting started on my Corsair Prince/Autarch that I will be able to use as an ally for my DE. I'll post some pics this weekend after I get a little work in. I'm basing him on the Yriel model with a pistol swapped in and a new head (I'm leaning towards the bald Raider pilot head-love that head!!)

For the most part it seems we have similar tastes in armies. I've been thinking about getting into Fantasy at some point with Empire, Elves, or Ogres, I just started Cryx for Warmachine. Also, do you paint your models individually or assembly line style?

| Wow, this thread is such a treasure! 17 pages of Warhammer porn and a long list of more stuff to come, looking forward to it! Edit: I quite like your bases (thanks for the tutorial!), but I'm wondering; which shade of Vallejo Weathering Powder do you use for the rust effect? | |

Does that make me the Hugh Hefner of 40k porn? I use Burnt Umber (#73110) for the Vallejo powder. Some of it is painted on using a mixture of Bestial Brown and orange. @BD: I tend to paint in batches of 3, sometimes 4 at the most. I find that 3 really is the magic number. PROGRESS!!! Hellions are all now painted and just need the bases and tribal designs done. Here's the Baron and his Flying Circus: While I'm chopping up stuff for the bases I will also start in on my Corsair Prince/Autarch conversion for my allied attachment of Corsairs(using the FW list). Here he is before headswap and other conversion nastiness (think of it as a 'before' pic): He'll be getting the bald Raider pilot head for sure. I'm considering magnetizing the back banner to allow for switching it out for a jetpack. Not sure that I'll be using the JP option, but it doesn't hurt to have choice? Back to avoiding my thesis writing

| I knew that his head wouldn't last long: I still need to wait until the jetpacks from the Corsair set get here to figure out how to magnetize the banner pack and jetpack. The left arm needs to be tweaked a bit (lightly pinned right now) and I need to figure out what to do with his left arm pistol-wise. I'm looking forward to getting this guy done! | |

| Thanks a lot, I'll order some and and see if I can manage! You hellions look unbelievably snazzy! Will you use similar bases to the one of the Baron for the rest of your Hellions? I'm not really fond of the clear ones either, so I'm currently looking at what bases could be suitable for Raiders and Ravagers. Do you think Flyer bases would be suitable? (with a normal stand of course). Good luck writing your thesis, if you need any advice on avoiding to write it let me know, I'll soon start on my third | |

| @Setomidor-Thanks! There is a picture in this month's White Dwarf of a Raider with a flying stand base. It looks...big. @Mortarion-thanks! Bases for the Hellions are DONE. Finished them in one sitting(used a hair dyer to get the brown ink wash to dry faster!). I'm going to draw the runes on the boards tonight. should have them painted on by middle of next week. Can't wait to actually get a game with them in all their painted glory I might get slowed down by converting some of my Corsair models for the escalation league at my LFGS. We'll see! | |

| First, awesome Hellions. Second, Yriel looks badass bald. Third, hair dryers are the gretest tools any painter could ever have... well... after paints and brushes and stuf. Great work as usual. Can't wait to see you Hellions with their runes. Oh, and I'm looking forward to seeing your Corsair stuff, when it arrives. | |
