So here is the wrap up from yesterdays 1 day, 4 game event...

First up the list

Drazhar – 230

5 Warriors, Blaster (60), venom with additional splinter cannon (65) – 125

1749 total.

The event managed 56 players which is HUGE for us - its the biggest 40k event ever for us. We are so isolated that the competative player base in not many more then 200 across the whole year who attend 1 or more events. To get 56 is a very big thing!

On to my games...

Game 1 - Semi mech Codex Space Marines - Pitched battle, annialation (VP not KP)
Game 2 - Mech Sisters of Battle - Dawn of war, capture and control (VP again but objectives worth 875 as well as kills earned)
Game 3 - Semi mech Imperial Guard - spearhead, annialation (VP not KP)
Game 4 - Mech Purifier Grey Knights - Pitched battle, seize ground (VP again but objectives worth 350 as well as kills earned)

I managed (not in this order thought) a 14-6 win, a 12-8 win, a 10-10 draw and a 11-9 loss for the day.
Can you guess which of the lists i won/drew/lost against???

I won the roll for first turn thanks to the Baron and chose to go first. I deployed heavily on the left flank with the theory that if he went right I could easily box him in with speed. Instead he deployed mostly opposite me with the termies&librarian in the landraider, 2 empty rhinos and attackbikes in reserve. Bolstered Ruins sat in his deployment zone for the thunderfire cannons.
I lined up my incubi charge can cackled to myself. Then he seized the initiative…

It hurt a lot that one roll and I never really recovered. On turn 1 I lost 2 raiders, 1 venom and a handful of warriors along with the lanceborn (I hate thunderfire cannons). Turn 1 saw me get off a 25” charge with Draz (12+2+6+6 = awesome!) and nail a tac squad who had strayed ever so slightly to close. I left the incubi in the raider figuring to use them to get the other tac squad. The beasts advanced up the middle of the board waiting the terminators. Draz killed 6 marines (4 on the first volley of attacks and with 2 6’s to wound another 2). My opponent then rolled on all his reserves and things got worse. The ven dread charged draz to help the last 2 marines (the sarge & melta gun) and I lost more warriors. Draz used darting strike to avoid the dread and finish the marines. My turn 2 saw no razorwing and little in the way of kills. My talos managed a shaken on the land raider but otherwise zip. Draw takes a wound from the ven dread. Turn 3 sees the termies pile out to take out the talos which they did when I rolled a 1 for my attacks and my beasts start taking wounds now as well. I lost the incubi raider and all of the incubi to the 2 thunderfire cannons. Draz managed to stun the ven dread for no wounds back. My turn 3 starts well with 2 dead termies and 3 dead tac marines to splinter fire. The beast pack is set to charge the termies when my opponent declares that he will use combat tactics to fail the LD test on the termies. He falls back some 8 inches and passes on the tac marines then realises his error. Not only are the beasts in range of the tac squad but this will put them within 6 of the falling back termies who are all of 7 inches from the table edge now. Draz is also within 6” thanks to the darting strike around the ven dread. This see’s me recover the game to a narrow loss and after 8 rounds of combat Draz has stunned the ven dread a number of times and only taken 2 wounds in response. We get called for time at the end of turn 5 but the outcome would not have changed significantly had we continued as I just could not kill his thunderfire guns or that damn land raider.

I won the roll and chose to go first. I declared I would move everything on turn 1.

I should have kept my mouth shut but he then said “I will full reserve” which when questioned more closely was actual reserve, not dawn of war move on turn 1 reserve. I could have lined his board edge with skimmers and left him with the saint and 2 outflanking dominions but could not bring myself to do it – it was his first tourney and he was about 16… so I explained what I would do if he chose to full reserve and explained exactly how it worked and showed the FAQ etc. He changed his mind – no probs. I felt better for it but it cost me a 20-0 win… The talos cleaned house this game with 2 rhinos, 10 sisters and an exorcist eaten for no wounds taken. The beasts just could not cut a break and chased a rhino for most of the game doing little. Draz killed something in the range of 20 sisters plus uriah and spent turns 4-6 chasing tanks with S7 furious charge but again I can not roll damage and manage to shaken them but little else. Infact apart from the first lance shot in the game claiming an exorcist every other shot aimed at a rhino, hit, pen, 1 or 2 on damage. Sign. Infact, apart from my inability to kill vehicles with anything short of S7+2d6 I had this game well in control and we made it to the end of turn 6 before we got called for time. Draw on objectives as both were contested but had I managed to kill one of the 2 empty vehicles on one of the objectives I could have blocked off the other and managed a massive win. As it stood, just a minor one.
12-8 Win

I lost the roll for 1st turn and full reserve. He reserves al’raheim and co.
This was going to suck. 12 vehicles. Crap. We skip turn 1 and move into 2. He rolls all his reserves on while I am still not on the table. I get the razorwing, incubi raider and trueborn raider and manage to stun the LRBT as well as missile dooming one of the blob squads containing 2 las cannons and a commissar – even going to ground he lost both sarges, both heavy weapons and 4 guys! Ace! The return volley left the trueborn raider immobilised and weapon destroyed and the razorwing immobilised, stunned. The incubi raider crashed and burned as did all of the incubi. Draz on the other hand was now 26 inches onto the table and the blob squad was all of 14” away… I got all my reserves turn 3 and rolled on. Draz charged the blob and started hacking away. I opened fire on the outflanking platoon with a bunch of splinter weapons and by the end of the game they were no more. My beasts managed to take out the special weapon team while the lances accounted for the valk. The baron took out a sentinel before failing his first shadow field save… again. We only got to turn 5 despite effectively not having 2 turns of the game. Draz finally died after my opponent took off the commissar in my turn of close combat to leave him infront of about 8 melta guns. When I drew this as my opponent I was playing for a draw from the get go so I guess I should be happy. What was interesting is that apart from the incubi raider, I did not lose any other vehicle or the talos. Even my Razorwing was 3 weapon destroyed and immobilised but not gone! I think I had one immobile venom and the trueborn raider was immobile and weapon destroyed but otherwise I was fine! I managed to take out a sentinel, all 3 chimera and the valk. Not enough to win on VP but a moral victory none the less.

I will point out that this is my regular gaming buddy and one of my oldest and dearest friends. We have been play testing these lists for about 3 months in the lead up to this and I have never beaten his list with mine. We have only once before met at a tourney where my CWE smashed his SM and he was looking for payback.
The terrain was instrumental for me in this game. I was able to use the GW landing platform to keep LOS blocked (he drove the razors under it and I promptly immobilised them) and stay clear of the psycannon purifier unit thanks to the short range. The beasts and baron took a few turns but managed to kill the GM and termies. The incubi charged crowe who had taken a wound to splinter fire who promptly then rolled a perils and died before we could fight. Draz charged 6 purifiers in cover and wiped them for no wounds. Turn 6 saw the game end (we rolled and failed for turn 7). It was the most relaxed tourney game ever. We play so regularly there were no questions and never any doubts as to what was happening. It was a great way to end the day.
I won 14-6 as well so that helped!
