Here’s a quick report on Stirling Wargamers Rapid Fire Tournament which I attended over last weekend. The tournament consisted of 6 games at 1750 points with a mix of old and new style deployments. As usual I didn’t take many pictures, too busy playing and with 2 hours per game it was going to be pretty tight time wise.
My List:
Baron Sathonyx
3 Blasterborn, Venom with 2 Cannons (x2)
5 Wyches, Hatwire Grenades, Venom with 2 Cannons (x4)
10 Warriors, Raider with Dark Lance (x2)
4 Beast Masters, 10 Khymera, 4 Razorwing Flocks
Ravager, 3 Dark Lances (x3)
Game 1Mission: Crusade with 5 Objectives
Deployment: Dawn of War
Opponent: Necrons
Lord in Command Barge, Destroyer Lord, Cryptek, 10 Immortals (x3), 5 Wraiths, Ghost Arc, 2 Night Scythes
My get Night Fight and I go 1st
I line up with the beast pack in front and spread the rest of the army fairly evenly across my deployment zone. He puts the Immortals across the middle 3rd of his zone. The barge goes RHS, Ghost Arc centre and wraiths on his left.
T1: The beasts advance across the table and I start shooting. T1 I kill 5 Immortals. He shuffles a bit, but has little to shoot at due to nightfight and my beasts are in cover. The wraiths advance on his left.
T2: I shoot some more and start to pummel the wraiths, taking down a couple here. I keep my units away from them as I don’t want charged. I continue to shoot into a unit of Immortals taking down a few more. The beasts arrive in his lines and pile straight into the unit of Immortals closest to the centre of his deployment zone. They don’t break and we are safe in combat.
His barge flies over and pings a couple of warriors, His scythes don’t come on at this point. The wraiths advance a bit more but can’t reach assault. His shooting is ineffective due to range so his immortals shuffle about again. In combat the beasts rip the immortals apart and move towards the next unit.

T3: The wraiths and destroyer Lord get the snot shot out of them. I start shooting at the Command Barge and take it down. The lord gets out and I take a wound or 2 off him with some splinter rifle shots. Meanwhile the beasts make contact with another unit of Immortals after a unit of wyches had sacrificed themselves to overwatch, and again inflict damage but don’t break them.
Both Scythes arrive this turn and I lose a unit or 2. His Lord heads after a venom and wrecks it, but the blasterborn had already jumped out earlier. Beasts finish off another Immortal unit.
T4: I get my 2 remaining ravagers onto the rear armour of his scythes. A unit of wyches prepare to eat some overwatch for the beasts. I get lucky against his scythes as through a combination of blasterborn and ravagers both get taken down. The Lord gets splintered down, but gets back up again. The beasts make contact with the 3rd
Immortal unit. Again we don’t break them.
His Lord gets back up and the beasts finish off the last Immortal unit.
T5: His Lord gets shot to pieces again and I take down his Ghost Arc to table him
Game 2Misson: The Emperors Will
Deployment: Vanguard Strike
Opponent: Tzeentch Deamons
Fateweaver, 9 Flamers (x2), 9 Horrors (x3), Changeling, 4 Screamers
I win the roll and elect to go 2nd
I decide to castle up in a corner to force him to deepstrike towards 1 area. I set up making it impossible for him to land in amongst me and have my raiders and ravagers at the front of my castle. He will need to be very brave to be able to touch anything other than these with his flamers.

[/img]
T1: He deepstrikes in and gets in Fateweaver, 2 units of Horrors, 1 unit of Flamers and a unit of Screamers. I take some hits, lose a venom but not much else.
I decide the unit of Flamers needs to go and getting rid of the Budgie would be pretty useful too. I fly an empty raider into position to prevent the flamers getting near enough to flame too much. I don’t want to break formation too much and let him in amongst me so everything moves to get jink saves and the beasts start to make their way forward to get into combat next turn. The Baron is at the end of this unit furthest away from his army. ( I fully expected my opponent to try and spawn the Baron and baited Fatey right here). I kill a few Horrors and Flamers despite Budgie’s re-rolls and as a bonus get him to crash. I manage to put a wound on him as well.
T2: He gets a couple of units in but it’s a bit immaterial as Fatey takes the bait and heads over to spawn the Baron which he duly does. However Fatey is out of range to give the rest of the army re-rollable saves. I lose a raider here and maybe a few other models here and there.
I now unleash everything I can against what he has on the table. I manage to kill Fateweaver and the spawn. I take down a unit of Horrors and start on the rest of the army.
In the end up the game ends on T5 with him having 3 horrors left contesting his objective with the beasts unit. I have mine with a unit of wyches and warriors. I have only lost 2 Venoms, a Raider, 15 wyches, some beasts and the Baron

Game 3Mission: Purge The Alien
Deployment: Old Style Dawn of War
Opponent: Space Marines
Captain on Bike, Bike Ssuad, 2 Tactical Squads, Dread Assault Cannon and T/L Auto Cannon (x3), 3 Predators 2 Full Las Cannons, 1 Auto Cannon and Heavy Bolters, 2 Storm Talons.
WE get Night Fight and I am forced to go 1st. I elect to put nothing on the table and have everything roll on T1. He does the same.
T1: I bring everything on and Turbo along my board edge. I put 2 wych Venoms and 1 of blasterborn behind ruins on my RHS about 18” in. The Beasts start out on their advance across the board. Everything else is within 6 “of my board edge. This means to be in range of me due to night fight he will have to move more than 6” and will then be on snap shots
He rolls onto the corner away from my advanced venoms and takes some shots at the beasts. I only lose a couple due to cover and stealth saves.
T2: I shoot everything I can into his wall of dreads and preds. I only kill a dread and maybe take a hull point off a pred. The Venoms turbo boost behind some ruins on his side of the board ready to deliver their cargo next turn.
He back further into a corner and is now totally backed up. He unloads on me and takes down 2 ravagers and 2 raiders. Fortunately the warriors are not inside, they are hiding in my deployment zone. I think he gets his Storm Talons on this turn.
T3: The Beasts hit a tactical squad, a unit of wyches makes it into a dread and I take down some of the other tactical squad with splinter cannons. One unit of Blasterborn target and luckily hit a Talon, he elects to go into hover mode to get a jink save. However I get through but can onlt stun-lock it.The beasts destroy the tactical squad and the wyches take a hull point off the dread.
In his turn the Bikes come over a bit and start shooting up the beasts as does the remains of his 2nd Tactical squad. It’s not too bad however as I had managed to consolidate into cover. I lose a couple more venoms here and some wyches. The wyches in combat with the dread wreck it and consolidate towards his tank castle.
T4: The wyches reach one of his preds, another unit of wyches reach the stunlocked Talon. Both of these are wrecked. The beasts hit his 2nd tactical squad and wipe it out.
In his turn he wipes out the beasts and the Baron. He kills the tank hunting and storm talon killing wyches.
The Game ends here as time runs out. I lose 14-8. I have killed 2 dreads, 1 predator, a storm Talon and 2 tactical squads. I also have first blood and line breaker. He has kill the warlord and 13 KP’s. The game wouldn’t have changed if we had a 5th turn, infact I might have lost more heavily.
So the end of day 1 and I am 2 wins and a loss. Not too bad.
Day 2
Game 4Mission:Big Guns Never Tire
Deployment: Spearhead
Opponent: Grey Knights
Coteaz, Vindicare Assassin, 3 Strike Squads, 10 Interceptors, 10 Purifiers
We get Nightfight and I win the roll for deployment and decide to go 1st.
I set up in my corner and wait to see how much of his army will start on the board. Almost everything does, and the Vindicare takes position on top of a ruin with LOS to The Baron.
T1: I start by killing the Vindicare and then by taking down some of 2 of his strike squads. I have moved a unit of trueborn up towards where the Vindicare was incase they were needed. The Baron and his beasts start their advance.
Most of my army is out of reach so he shuffles most of his forward and kills a few of the beasts. He forces them to re-roll saves and despite them going to ground in area terrain I lose more than I would like.
T2: I continue to shoot from distance trying to eliminate a unit at a time.
His interceptors don’t arrive. However something shunts into my deployment zone and takes down 2 venoms, I lose a few wyches to explosions.
T3: I deal with the close up threats and eradicate them completely. I shoot up a few more squads and now have the beasts in combat. Coteaz’s unit is gone, but I can’t finish him off.
Interceptors arrive. Coteaz jumps into another squad. I lose a bundle of warriors to some flaming action. However things are looking good. There are some inteceptors, the remains of a strike squad and Coteaz on the board.
T4: The intecptors are shot off the table. Finally I take down Coteaz with a Dark Lance shot after his strike squad fell under splinter cannon fire.
So another win and I am 3-1
Game 5Mission: Assassination
Deployment: Pitched Battle (5 Objectives)
Opponent: Chaos Marines:
Huron, Chaos Lord, 4 Terminators, 15 CSM, 15 Berzerkers, 10 Cultists, 2 Helldrakes and 2 Obliterators
I win the roll to go 1st, and there is no nightfight.
I set up with the Beasts front and centre and spread out across the middle 1/3rd of my deployment zone. He decides to put the Lord with the Berzerkers in reseve, they have outflank, the terminators and helldrakes are also in reserve. He sets up with Huron, 15 CSM and an Oblit on my LHS and 10 CSM, 10 Cultists and an Oblit on my RHS.
T1: There are 38 models of his army on the table and I have 2 turns to kill them before his reserves can arrive.
The beasts move and run straight towards the nearest target which is the cultists. I start shooting as much as possible and take down a few marines from each unit. His shooting is limited to the oblits which don’t achieve anything.
[/img]
T2: Thebeasts advance again and I open up on everything else again. The beasts wipe the cultists and consolidate towards the smaller CSM squad. As my T2 ends he only has 11 models standing, Huron, 1 Oblit, and 9 CSM between 2 squads.
He rolls for reserves but doesn’t get either Helldrake in. The Berzerkers arrive on my RHS, but I have moved everything more the 18” away from the edge so nothing happens there. His terminators D/s right into the middle of the table and take a few shots at a venom. He shoots at the beasts and an Oblit takes a lance off one of my raiders.
T3: I continue to fire away at Hurons unit. My warriors in front of the Berzerkers shuffle back and fire at them, along with a venom. I remove the last Oblit, and start on the terminator unit. The Beasts finish of the last of the smaller CSM unit and start to consolidate back to wards the Berzerkers, in my deployment zone.
His Helldrakes come on and the flamers take down some wyches, they also take down a Ravager with Vector strike. The Berzerkers advance towards my warriors.
T4: The beasts move and run back across the table. My skimmers as much as possible try to get behind his Helldrakes. Huron and his squad disappear under sustained shooting, I take the terminators down to 1 and with a bit of luck take down 1 Helldrake. I continue to run from and shoot the Berzerkers.
His lord breaks off from the Berzerkers and chases the warriors. The berzerkers move back towards the objective down in the corner of my deployment zone. The Helldrakes flames some more wyches off the table and I lose a venom to the terminator.
T5: I shoot his Lord down and pop a few more shots into the Berzerkers. The Beasts advance on them. I take down the terminator and the remaining Helldrake with more lance fire. The beasts make contact with the Berzerkers and wipe them out.
Another tabling and another win. I am now 4-1 and will be playing on table 2 for my last game.
On table 1 is the Daemon player I beat in Game 2 and an undefeated Ork player. If things go my way I am still in with a chance of winning the tournament.
Game 6Mission: Purge the Alien
Deployment: Pitched Battle
Opponent Orks
War Boss, Big Mek, 30 Boys, 20 Boys, 10 Boys in Trukk, 3 TankBusta units, 2 x 3 Killa Kans
We get nightfight and I win roll to go 1st

This was the lowlight of the weekend for me. Needless to say I stayed as far away as possible whilst shooting as much as possible for 4 turns.
As we are nearing the very end of his T4 the TO calls out that there is only 20 minutes left and not to start another game turn. About a minute later we are done with his turn and he says that’s it. I look at the table, I have lost the Baron and beasts, 1 venom and 2 wych squads for a total of 6 KP’s.
He has on the table 1Kan, Warboss and 2 Boys, Big Mek and 5 Boys, 8 Boys in cover, 12 Tank Bustas out of cover and that’s it. I have 1st blood and 4 unit for 5 KP. It’s fairly obvious what would happen if we play the 5th turn. He’s claiming that it’s a spawny win for him as time has run out. A few folk have gathered round and suggest we play the turn. Someone suggests I go see the TO to get the 5th turn played. I say no as if someone wants to win that badly then F*** it.
So I lose by 1 KP and finish up 4-2.
In the end I placed 5th out of 32. After the awards ceremony the TO called me aside. He tells me he has been made aware of what happened at the end of my game. He tells me he would have forced the 5th turn. It turns out that the guy who finished 2nd had been the one to make him aware of what had happened.
The TO then offers me free entry to next years event, part of the 2nd place prize, he explains that I would have finished 2nd if I had won the last game.
