PostSubject: Transporting your Dark Eldar   Transporting your Dark Eldar I_icon_minitimeMon Jun 27 2011, 17:26

How are people doing this? I am looking at probably building 3x Ravagers, 3x Raiders and 4x Venoms... on top of the foot models...

What carry cases or army transports or whatever are people using?

It'd be great to get some ideas so I don't buy the wrong stuff and end up with something substandard for my army!

Thanks in advance!

Battlefoam is the way to go foe DE.

I have the Ravager/Raider tray, the warrior tray, the wych tray, the Hellion tray and the Venom tray.

I am very please with them and the cases are nice as well.

I am a little annoyed with the pack plus I have on the bottom of my 720 case because it is a bit of a pain to get the trays out, but it because it is a snug fit.

But the trays themselves are very good and cut to fit. The hellion one is the one I like the least, but that has more to do with the way I built my hellions so I have to do a little creative fitting.

They area little pricey, but I will tell ya I am very happy with them. So much so I am giving all my Sabol stuff to my son and buying Battle foam for all of my other armies as well.

At the moment, I'm looking at shoeboxes with rolled up paper in them...

I've got lasercut foam (battlefoam style) for most of my armies, I suspect I'll be getting something for my DE aswell now that they're beginning to take form.

Regular foam trays plus all my dice, rulebook, etc., etc., in a giant plastic Ikea box for $12.00. Lid is not too secure though.

Apparently they have another softer sided, collapsible box that's even better and fits regular trays fairly well. I'm going to check them out the next time that I go. See here

Tanks I uually just carry around in a box of some kind, while the smaller models I have in a usual model case. The box are a bit clumsy, but I prefer that before having them in the case where they break...

I have stuff from Feldherr for my old DE right now: http://www.feldherr.net/uk/

* You can custom pluck the trays...

But I'm looking at the BattleFoam custromtrays for the Dark Eldar and I'm 90% sure I'm going to go their way.

If budget is an issue: I've transported my Raiders/Ravagers (old style) over long distances in a sturdy cardboard box filled with packing peanuts. It works GREAT! I've never had any damage from transportation, and it was free with found materials around the house.

On site I open the box, take what I need out, it helps to have a place for each model so you know where to grab. When it's time to pack up, I just grab a couple of handfulls of the peanuts out and put them in the box lid. Place my models back in, and then dump the peanuts in the lid back in. I can often pack up faster than my friends who have battlefoam cases made up for their army.

PostSubject: Re: Transporting your Dark Eldar   Transporting your Dark Eldar I_icon_minitimeTue Jun 28 2011, 19:11

I have the 720 and I needed to order a pack plus to go with it.

If I had to do it again, and I probably will eventually anyway, I would get the big one, 1520 I think it is. Seems like it would make things simpler to get in an out.

Mostly because the vehicles take up so much space and getting mine out of the pack plus is a nuisence. I think I will ultimately have 3 or 4 of the vehicle foam trays. 1 for my venoms ( 9 of them) Raider Ravager ( 3 ravagers/2 raiders) an additional raider tray (5 raiders) and then for my Razorwings. The foam for the raider/ravager is 6 inches tall. its mighty big.

I am very please with the battle foam ones. At least for DE.

While I am thinking about, the pack plus is nice because you can pack several infantry trays in it, and probably get them out easier than the vehicle trays, but it leaves more room for vehciles in the larger case.

I have a bunch of the pluck foam stuff from Sabol, and its pretty decent, but I never seemed to get as much efficiency out of them as I would have liked. I think it is part of the nature of pluck foam. So those go to my son for his stuff. I think what turned me off from Sabol was my cavalry. I never seemed to get as much out of them and it was a nuisence trying to fit my knights in a single tray.

Their not all bad though. I carried around my skaven army in Army transport for years and never had any problems. I guess the rats like small crammed dark places. LOL

I've been a big Army Transport guy since they first came on the market, and have used pretty much every other type of miniature case even some not designed for miniatures specifically (I would not recommend depending on where you live to use rifle cases, people tend to look at you a bit odd and they are definately not mall friendly).

I have not used Battle Foam as of yet and was curious if your experience with it is the same as a few of my friends who use/have used Battle Foam and that is regarding the stiffness of the foam causing the paint to rub off their miniatures?

I must say the custom cut foam is great looking but the above issue has me more than a bit concerned.

Once my army is finished I'm going with Battlefoam all the way. I thought about magnetizing the bases and putting the army on a movement tray. I wasn't crazy about the tray though, as one sharp turn or sudden slamming of the brakes in my vehicle meant the demise of my army and countless hours invested.

I must say the custom cut foam is great looking but the above issue has me more than a bit concerned.

I have not noticed that the foam is any different from the Sabol foam. I spend a significant amount of time on my figures and I surely do not want the paint coming off.

That being said, the fit on the custom cut pieces is pretty tight in some spaces and definitely is cut for a cookie cutter approach to figure construction. So what I am going to do for a few of mine is to cut out a little bit of foam here and there to give my figures just tiny bit of "elbow room" because they do tend from time to time to cut caught in the foam with their sharp pointy bits, which would happen in any foam.

Also, the prows of the raiders/ravagers do like to stick as well, so my remedy for this is to put them in prow first and remove them rudder first.

Just little things really to consider with the foam which is true of any foam you buy which are easily overcome with a little consideration.

PostSubject: Re: Transporting your Dark Eldar   Transporting your Dark Eldar I_icon_minitimeThu Jun 30 2011, 15:50

I got tired of the foam and how my spikey men stuck to the foam or just plain didn't fit well so I went ahead and once again over-engineered a magnet system that should reduce breakage and easy deployment.

So I spend some time buying 200 button magnets for my new models so every (I do mean every) model got a magnet under the base. The raiders have metal screw in them that I use as a stem and even those are magnetized. The new talos will be a challenge as will the venoms but I will engineer the crap out of them until I feel I can stick them down with confidence that they will not come lose in the case.

The case, right now I am using a small plastic carry case that fits in the Apocalypse Back Pack (or was that a 5th edition back pack?). I bought some galvanized sheet metal at the hardware store and cut it down to line the carry case with so both the lid and the base has sheet metal and models stuck to both would not hit each other when I close it.

Perhaps I should take a picture of it.

I now have so many models that I am now going to take GW's biggest case and line that one with sheet metal too - I figure with both lined properly I should be able to stick all my models into that one case alone.

As for breakage they do not come loose. I can put them in base to base contact and they do not budge. The raiders so move (pivot) from the one magnet holding them down but they do not come lose which I have no problems with so I let them swivel all they want. The old Talos was a pain as it was all metal so it did come lose when I shook the case (and the talos became a wrecking ball) but with the new Talos that is no longer an issue.

Yes, over engineered and expensive but I am hoping over the long haul that breakage comes to a complete stop and thus saving me time and pain in repairing models every time I have a game. I guess I just suck with the foam.

Gale force 9 had made some very nice magnetic bases already done.

I bought a bunch for my Ogres, then like a goofball decided to do demons and sold my ogres. So now I have 20 or 30 40mm magnetic bases....

They are nice though and don't budge either.

I've not done anything with my Dark Eldar yet (As they are still being built) but I transport my High Elf army around in a magnetised box. Personally i would avoid the magnetised bases. I just bought self adhesive A4 sheets of self adhesive flexi metal to line my box and movement trays and A4 self adhesive Magnetic sheets.

I cut squares out of the magnetic sheet around my bases just peeled of the backing off and hey presto magnetic bases. I just use stackable clip boxes from a local stationary chain. obviously bigger boxes depending on the size of army/models.

I will more than likely do the same with my Dark Eldar as this is more than strong enough to keep plastic models safe in the boot of a car travelling to tournaments etc. Rare earth magnets and greenstuff on the bases for anything heavy or metal.

Grumpy, I'd like to see some photos of your setup if you have time. I've been kicking around the idea of using magnets or foam and can't decide.

I just use a standard GW small case, the last foam tray I've torn up to fit my two raiders, 3 venoms(custom builds) and 3 talos(2 official 1 custom) though I do have to cart aound my ravagers in a cardboard box and bubble wrap in my backpack with my books Sad

For my infantry I use a standard GW case, works a treat.

For vehicles I am using a power tool case, large toolbox would do the same, with the vehicles rolled up in lots of bubble wrap. Never had any problems with this or any breakages, you can fill any spaces in the case with extra bubble wrap to eliminate movement during carrying and of course the case is strong enough to prevent damage from outside.

Of course it helps that I can get an endless supply of bubble wrap from my work Wink

With the battle foam stuff, I glue the flying stands onto my jetbikes/raiders/ravagers and eventually my hellions (stop them moving around), will they fit in the battle foam stuff??

I did just messure them on the stand, and the ravagers (biggest sail) fits just in at 6"which they describe the depth of thier foam, so if anyone who has experience with these guys could help, that would be great

They fit. I have the raider / ravager foam and the hellion foam.

The hellion foam is a little odd in that its doesn't accommodate really dynamic poses very well, but it is better than anything else out there. I think if it was a another half inch deeper it would be perfect.
