Cheap starting army

I agree with that.

I still win more than 50% of my games though, and if I didn't I'd make adjustments to my lists and/or tactics

Ok, here is one Ive been almost preaching about. If anyone is thinking about getting into Dark Eldar, this is probably the best way to start. Its cheap for the size of the army, and pretty competitive to boot. Let me post the list first, then I will describe what it contains and how to use it.

So this army is made from 2 Battleforces, 2 Raiders, 3 Ravagers, and 1 Archon blister. It gives you a chance to play with almost every trick in the DE handbook, and gives you a balance force to build apon and change to suit your tastes.

this was made for 5th, but with a few changes it can me made for 6th. Its not the most competitive build, but atleast gives you all of what you need for a competitive build, and is a decent start

To Ben_s - I am still reading and i'm very thankful for all the help so far.

Get the battle force for a diverse setup. The easiest way to save money is in your troop selection. To illustrate.

10 Kabalite Warriors or Wyches with whatever in a Raider costs $29+$37.25 plus tax. $66.25 plus tax for a Troop/Elite choice.

5 Kabalite Warriors or Wyches with whatever in Venom costs $14.5+$30 plus tax. $44.5 plus tax for a Troop/Elite choice.

Those prices are from games workshop so you can shave off quite a few dollars by going straight to the secondary and/or wholesale market.

Heavy Support is also an expensive slot that's hard to dodge. Ravagers are something of a staple but they cost like $50 (more than the Jetfighter). I've heard of people taking Dark Lances & other bitz from the Kabalite Warrior boxes and converting their own Ravagers. That would probably save you like $12+ per Ravager. I think it would be really hilarious to just use the guys who hang off the side of the Raider.
