New list for newb, 1500ish points

Hi peeps,

considering restarting 40k after a (very) long break.

DE look like the way forward (I'm a sucker for a challenge) and am wondering if I'm going to disgrace myself on the novices' scene with the following - as soon as I find some opponents.

HQ: Haem Ancient. Liq gun + venom blade
El:  3 Grots, 1 liq gun, Aberration with Scissorhand. -- Raider Nightshield

T1: 8 Wracks, Liq gun, Acothyst with Scissorhand. - Raider Nightshield
T2: 10 Kabalite Warriors, Blaster, SC, Sybarite - Raider Nightshield
T3: 10 Kabalite Warriors, Blaster, SC, Sybarite - Raider Nighshield
T4: 5 Wyches, Haywire, Hekatrix Power Weapon, PGL - Venom nightshield
T5: 5 Wyches, Haywire, Hekatrix Power Weapon, PGL - Venom nightshield

F1: 6 reavers, 2 HL, Arena Champ, Venom Blade

H1: Talos. TL Liq Gun
H2: Talos. TL Liq Gun

Unless my maths is fubar, this should be just shy of the 1500 point mark.

From reading stuff here (and thanks to all for the excellent quality of posts), I'm figuring the Kabalites should be good for objective duties, the Wyches are for tank hunting as are the reavers (if they're not bladevaning) and I guess at a pinch the Taloses. +4 Raider DLs. Anti Infantry seems adequately covered...

Questions.

Are 5 strong wyche squads worth tooling up in case they run into combat, or are they too squishy to make it worth the points?

From a bit of the fluff in the Codex, it looks like the DE have managed to capture/experiment on some 'nids. Am I going to get thrown out of town for buying a box of Nid Warriors and using Talos bits to turn them into a Haem Bodyguard/Experiment? Anyone else done this? I've seen rat ogre and gheist(?) conversions, not sure I've seen any Nid ones. They are all 40mm bases though right?

Bits (and funds) are a little limited, but the majority of this is covered by a battleforce, 1 box of Warriors and additional vehicle purchases, The Taloseseeseseseses are partly 'cos I think the models are awesome, the battle reports I read here seem to indicate that they throw opponents a bit of a curve ball, and I'm hoping for lots of spare bitz out of the kits.

Thanks for any opinions/feedbacks. I'm mostly looking to get some stuff painted and up and running, but suggestions for optimising in the future will be more than welcome.

5 Wyches are good for tank hunting and those too 5 strong squads can be used together to tarpit a Riptide or something similar with low attack value. No need for expencive Hekatrix.

Othervice the list looks good. Perhaps too many upgrades makes troops selection expencive. Aberration likes to have a venom blade though. 6 Attacks in a charge with normally 2+ rerollabde wounding is brutal.

Converting Grots can be done quite freely I think. Their fluff allows it nicely so go ahead with yopur nids idea.

Overall the list looks interesting, i will knitpick a bit and offer some options

T1: 8 Wracks, Liq gun, Acothyst with Scissorhand. - Raider Nightshield Skip NS, most likely these guys want to get into CC/close gunfire seeing as you got a SH and a LFGT2: 10 Kabalite Warriors, Blaster, SC, Sybarite - Raider Nightshield. A lot of upgrades here. Sybarite is a point sink generally. Blaster and NS is counter intuitive.T3: 10 Kabalite Warriors, Blaster, SC, Sybarite - Raider Nighshield
T4: 5 Wyches, Haywire, Hekatrix Power Weapon, PGL - Venom nightshield. PGL is not needed as the wyches already charge thru cover. Dont waste points in upgrading a 5man wych squad as they have 2 missions. molotov-mission and overwatch eating (at least when they are just 5man. thats my experience at least)T5: 5 Wyches, Haywire, Hekatrix Power Weapon, PGL - Venom nightshield

I am not an expert and i think your list would do quite well, but you are a bit heavy on upgrades, which is easy for us. Our upgrades are quite awesome!

You are right to take the ancient in this case, as the grots need LD9 and I5 helps them for sweeping advance and other initiative tests. WS5 and A3 means he has almost double the damage output of a regular haem against WS4. However give him a 10pt power axe instead of a venom blade this will give the unit 5 WS5 S5 AP2 attacks on the charge (remember you always want the aberration to accept any challenges).

As for the squad I would try and bump them up to 3 grots ans 1 aberration. The aberration shouldn't take a scissor hand the venom blade is a third of the price and more effective, the venom blade is great on the aberration, as it gives him an extra attack (as it gives him an extra close combat weapon), and allows him to re-roll to wound (it also means he's wounding T4-5 models on a re-rollable 2 without the need for furious charge). The scissor hand gives you an extra attack but also only means you are wounding T4 on 3s when you don't have furious charge (when you get charged or during the second round of combat), so your paying more to be less effective in a lot of situations.

Again drop the scissor hand for a venom blade, it's just too expensive for basic squad leaders.

Drop the sybarite, he isn't needed, especially if you run your warriors in cover near their raider rather than in them.

Small wych squads are for tank hunting and tying things up, drop the hekatrix, the PGL and the power weapon.

Considering your list is also a hybrid list, I would drop all the night shields, as they are no where near as effective in hybrid lists.
