There's been such a bad atmosphere around this website in the past 24 hours, apart from some noble exceptions, that I thought I'd do something nice and finally start my log with something funny.

I was seriously considering naming this the Kabal of the Knee Jerk Reaction or something similar.

Anyway, have a laugh, here's a grotty slave for a raider. His hands have been cut off and replaced with his restraints, and his head thing kinda looked like a lazy, dirty gag to me. He looks sulky.

Much much more to come, I hope you all don't mind a mix of new and classic models. I'm no great shakes as a painter, but I take a lot of time and try hard

Hey, hey thesaltedwound, also looking forward for your work. I kind of agree regarding the bad atmosphere, especially in the rumors section. It’s kind of funny that most of the people, who are quarrelling out here, are the ones I have never known of their existence, probably competitive players, or people who just likes to argue. Even though I don’t regularly participate much in this forum, I surely read a lot in it all year long.

But alas, I perceive the Dark Eldar as a whole (painting, collecting, gaming), and for me, it’s the most beautiful army you can field in the Warhammer 40K universe. And just for that my friend, it’s the main reason for why I’m here.

Yeah much agreed with both of you, been a real shame for that to stain what is otherwise the best forum I've ever been on.

So, as this is a project log and not just a photo of a goblin, I've been trying all evening to take photos of these guys. Tres Brujas from the Cult of the Salted Wound.
How do you adjust the f-stop on a 600D anyway?? I'm annoyed that the highlights aren't coming through, but I just can't seem to get it right.





Some questions! 1 - what do you think I should do with the unpainted parts on the pistols? I'm thinking to keep it black and just do the gems green or red.

2 - I know neither are particularly good, but which wych has the better flesh tone? Marilyn Manson or the slightly less pale chicks?

3 - How to flesh better? Halp.

I was going to ask what colors you used for the bone colored pistols. Not really sure for the black areas of the pistol, I think you should go ahead with just painting the gems to be honest. Probably highlighting a bit the barrel of the splinter pistols with a slight medium grey, I think it will come out just fine.

Same problem here regarding the flesh, haven’t found the perfect receipt for pale flesh. I kind of like the Marilyn style, but I guess it will be a pain to replicate for larger areas of the skin.

I’m going to try a new technique soon. VGC Warmgrey as a base color, then washing it with a purple wash, highlighting it again with the same Warmgrey, and probably adding some pale flesh or white to the mix for future highlights.

Thanks guys! I'd actually started off with the red/bone basically reversed on my kabbies armour and weapons, but I like this way so much I'm going to re-do them. Maybe after feedback. I'm not re-doing my classical bone talos though

Bone pistols + knives are karak stone, then a reikland fleshshade wash, more karak stone then a final screaming skull highlight. Seraphim sepia works well as a wash too.

For reference, the current flesh colour is kislev/reikland/kislev for the girls, with an added layer of pallid wych for the emo dude. But I think he looks too like a greasepainted clown, and they look too tan I'll try a mixture of the two on a future model.

They look top notch, I'm a fan of the super pale skin, the unhealthy drained feel really fits for me.

I'd second just the gems as well, the bone contrast works great I think.

Damn I really need to redo my dark eldar

I think the paler skin fits DE. The other one is probably what a non-albino Dark Eldar looks like. But let's face it, what Dark Eldar isn't albino?

I love the skin tone, they look kind of like geishas. The whole DE range has kind of an oriental aesthetic, so it fits really well, nice job! In fact, the middle one holding the knife out sort of puts me in mind of a character from onbe of my favourite comics, Lucifer, so I very much approve! With mine, I just use Rakarth Flesh and Agrax Earthshade - they look a bit... healthier than I would like, but the contrast between the dark wash and the pale skin really defines the musculature. I was using Dheneb Stone and Devlan Mud. I miss Devlan Mud. I REALLY don't miss Dheneb Stone, that stuff was a nightmare. I must post some pictures of my DE at some point, if for no other reason than to prove I actually have Dark Eldar, not just the armies I bother posting pictures of!

I agree about the atmosphere recently, and durahamter is right, all sorts have crawled out of the woodwork to throw fuel on what they perceive to be a funeral pyre. Little do they know that us people of positivity are about to rise from the flames like the proverbial phoenix and start kicking ass and taking names

Thanks for the kind words! I'll be finishing more today (counts as tomorrow for me, after a sleep!) weather allowing. That is, if the weather is nice, I won't allow myself to stay in painting sorry lol

Talking of faces those are some pretty sweet ones your gals are sporting there, great painting.

Any chance of your red recipe? I'm thinking of doing some of Khromys' Kabal and am currently musing on ways to do the red.

PS: Nice one for the heads up the other day. I always find that hobbyists of the more reasonable persuasion can be found in the project logs of most forums.

What you say is true, or at very least you have some visual reference as to their sanity. I personally wouldn't trust squidmaster as far as I could spit a brick, based on that scale.

Red is really easy, and a lot of fun since for most of it you can be really messy and it doesn't matter:

Base mephiston red all over the armour bits. Wash x2 with nuln oil. Just go crazy with it.
(at this point I put the eshin grey on the fabric bits)
Then wash the armour and fabric one more time with the nuln oil!
Highlights are thinned down wazdakka red, twice, and evil sunz scarlet if you feel brave. Personally I thought that popped too much, so I've just done it on the forearm runes.

You could probably:
1. start with a darker red and
2. save the final nuln wash til post-highlights. But now I've started this way I don't want to go changing things.

I made a mistake in my last post! The red armour only gets two washes of nuln oil. Sorry if you'd gone ahead with it Yak. Although I think it would still look cool the way I said.

Looking good man! The red and bone scheme, as well as the color choice for the hair really look great and the execution is very nice as well. Love the skin tone though I think it could use a tiny bit of reikland flesh wash just accentuate their facial features. Great work so far looking forward to MOAR!

WHAT!!!! Only 2 coats of Nuln Oil? You said go crazy with it, its all up the wall and i threw a couple of pots out the window!

Quick update of tonight's painting - five wyches finished in total. Now I've moved onto the models whose poses I was especially proud of, since I'm sure on the colour scheme. The razorflail cutie looks posed kind of oddly until you see her fighting something taller than herself, like it's popped up behind and startled her.

I wanted to do something different with the running legs rather than just have everyone legging it forwards. I think that went quite well, and I'll take a better photo of her tomorrow. This was just from my phone.

Will you be using wyches with the new codex?

You know, maybe. Now I've started them and they're painted, they're gonna get used sometimes. I like to see what I can make of "bad" units. I used scourges before they were cool, maybe now I can still use wyches when they're not anymore

I used scourges in fifth... does that qualify as before they were cool?

They became cool less than a week ago, so I'm gonna say yes
