| I see people using various options as substitutes for Grotesques, would Skaven Stormfiends be too large? And what size base would they go on? | |

| 40 mm.
I've heard if you leave their extra optional armor off, Stormfiends work fine. You can also use old Fantasy Rat Ogres or Crypt Horrors. I have had good success with converting pre-painted Confrontation Wulfen to look like the Space Wolf scouts the Prophets of Flesh Grotesquified. I also own some made from old Dreamblade minis. All those options should run you less than buying actual 40k grots.

Here is a little help from another thread in the dark city. I converted crypt horrors.

| According to count adhemar the storm fiends are a bit large and he uses his as Talos.
However all of the suggestions here are good. I have a set of rat ogre Grotesque and they are very easy to convert with Talos/chronos bits.

| I have both storm fiends which I have not yet converted and crypt horror which I have converted. My issue with the fiends is not the size, its the skaven insignias and rat-ness, the fantasy side of me has a hard time forgetting they are skaven. | |

| But you can easily remove the rat markings, right? And the face... They need a mask anyway | |

| Yes, the tail is easily not attached, and yes I'll be using a mask, I guess I'm just giving myself excuses to not work on them. I have projects piling up. | |

| Didn't see this mentioned but there is a thread in the painting/modelling section specifically on the size of grotesques and their various common alternatives.
http://www.thedarkcity.net/t12677-grotesque-model-size-request
Basically the official grotesque model is slightly taller than 2 inches because he's mid-stride and has his arm and gear on his back sticking up. Most alternatives are going to be flat-footed and somewhat shorter (unless you stick crap on their backs). Typically this works out to 1.7-1.8 inches.
The rat ogres are a pretty serious contender if you want to stick with pure GW stuff. The mutants for the fantasy chaos warshrine kit work pretty well too if you can get them. Straight up fantasy ogres work too but have a big hole in their gut which... you can use however you like. I plan on putting little transparent shells over mine when I finish painting, so you can see inside...
All take Talos masks pretty easily and with no cutting. The rat ogres need the mask filled in from underneath with green/white/grey stuff. Also the rat runes aren't that noticeable and could easily be filled in or used as scars/brands if you wanted to. I used some of my rat-ogres' tails as... conduits to feed into their flesh gauntlets. What's it feeding into them? best not to think about it.

| Right now I have three rat ogre's and am working on three crypt horrors. I like the more lean look of the horrors better though all of the good conversions I've seen require some green stuff work. | |

| Mutated bullgryns (just thought of that now) I'm using crypt horrors at the moment (lots of green stuff) | |

| Why lots of green stuff? The ones I built are fairly light on that... | |

Because I'm very picky with my conversions.

| For me it was also very light on Green Stuff, Horde Warspears were used as base model | |

| Here's one of my Grotesques converted from the Stormfiends. Yes - they are large. But that's how I like mine to look - pumped full of drugs, hormones and rage! [/img] | |

| Yeah I really wanted to make mine from stormfiends, but they cost a lot more and I already started with crypt horrors. Which still look awesome! | |

[/img] Excuse me but bloody hell they look fantastic!!! Edited to add; I'm sure someone has posted elsewhere that Stormfiends make a great Talos/Cronos base for conversion as they're so big.
