Substitute ideas

I want to discuss ideas how to substitute certain dark Eldar units good and cheap.
Like age of Sigmar chaos hound as a khymera
Spirit hosts as Mandrakes (see my Kabal)
Maybe wood elf spite echt revenant as clawed fiends
Goblin raider spider as khymera
Murder of crows as Razorwing Flocks

It would be great if we had a sticky thread for questions like this, as i see them popping up often these days.

I don't know if it's cheaper but puppetwars barghest are awesome models for khymera or possibly clawed fiends.

I use vampire counts dire wolves for my dogs. Cheap and effective.

I've come up with a strange conversion recently, using the Snakeman body of the Dungeon Twister Prison box, arms from various sets, and a Dark Elves Cold One head. It's supposed to be a Sslyth.

While i just had the snakeman lying around, i think Cold Ones pieces are the way to go to craft Sslyths.

Dreamblade minis make great Grotesques. So do Island of Blood rat ogres.

Crypt Horrors with Talos masks make awesome grotesques

AoS Orgres: Grotesques
Morghast Harbingers: Cronos
Reaper Mini-Snakes/naga: Sslyth
Witch Aelves: Wyches/Bloodbrides
Executioners: Incubi
Black Ark Corsairs: Corsairs or Treuborns
AoS Assassin: Solitaire, Succubus, Archon etc...
Black Ark Fleetmaster: Archon (I love this guy waiting for it to be available again to get)

What about Mandrakes?

I prefer the dire wolves to the chaos hounds as it seems chaos players use these instead of flesh hounds. The gryph hounds or whatever could be used as well though I think it would take more modification to make it look right as they have Sigmar's hammer on the collar.

Not to beat a broken drum, but Confrontation PVCs are a supremely awesome source of Covens material. Wulfen given some masks also make great Grotesques. (Like the mutated Space Wolf grots that the Prophets of Flesh made that one time...)

Confrontation is still making miniatures? I wanted the black paladins of Acheron as incubi or warlocks but I thought they stopped making miniatures.

They are coming back, mate.
Long story short, some american company bought Rackam's rights to confrontation, and began selling prepainted plastic crap. They realized that was not what people wanted, so they looked for an opportunity to sell the rights. Some belgian guy (i think), old fan of the system, bought the rights AND the molds, and they are planning... "Confrontation Resurrection".
Isn't that AMAZING news ?

The company in charge is now "Editions sans detour", who are also in charge of the french part of "Call of Cthulhu".

Dunno from top of my head, but check the size of their bases.

I mean its in the description on GW page - size of the base is mentioned after you click on the "read more".

I wouldn't sub Aelf wyches for darkeldar wyches as a box of those is $60 and wyches are about $29 (USD) for the same number of models

If you are looking for cheaper true, but they give quite a few extra head and weapon options, plus they work as a substitute aesthetically if you like their look.

Some models that I like for subsitutes are Coldone/Darkespawn Knights as Sslyth. (Although they could be used as any biker unit pretty easily)

Back in 7th I was considering running a sslyth bomb and was going to use Spite Revenants as the basis of my conversion.

there 32mm bases

A little greenstuff goes a long way. The basic warrior and wych are good templates for many other units.

Mandrakes can be wyches with some greenstuff hammer pants and arm flames.
Raiders become ravagers easily with some darklance gunners standing on deck.

If you want to be super cheapo with the razorflock just stick a bunch of blades together and say they're blade beetles.

Seeing what's available for cheap at your local hobby store or ebay or whatnot is a wellspring of innovation. Somebody getting rid of their 90's space marines for new Primaris? You can human centipede two of them together to form a truly grotesque grotesque.
