Also, the box says it contains a unit of Warriors, but do they have to be Warriors? Trueborn no longer have their own dataslate. They got rolled into the Warrior dataslate as a 3pt/model upgrade. Yes they become Elites instead of troops, but are there such slots in a formation? Show any TO the 7E codex. Here is the dataslate where I bought a unit of Warriors, bought a few more, then paid points per model to upgrade them before purchasing any other options.

Another point, the Tau got their Fire Warriors split into Strike teams and Breacher teams, and they each got a dataslate.

Those are all questions I'm sure have been thrown at the FAQ people, but we're not likely to hear back for a little while. (It may be a week, may be months, who knows?)
Technically speaking, Trueborn are just an upgrade for Warriors. I guess it depends on what the Datasheet for the "Purge Coterie" actually says.

If the small formation was something like "Kabalite squad + transport, archon, reavers" Would you say that the archon tax is worth the proposed kill point increase or jink save? Obviously those are speculative and if it comes out to "free grisly trophies" no one's going to pick it up.


Overall though, the box seems like a decent purchase. I have an extremely small army so far and I must say it looks appealing. i'd be looking to convert the raider into a ravager and I dunno that i'd actually use the Archon but I guess a proxy Lhamaean is fine. Maybe there will be a time where they make the Archon usable.

In my wildest dreams, the Formation is essentially a watered down version of the Stormsurge Apoc formation from White Dwarf. The benefits were:

* Had to Deepstrike
* Raider benefitted from the Hard to Hit rule as if it were a Flyer the turn it arrived
* Reavers didn't scatter if placed within a certain distance of the Archon's raider
* Negative leadership bubble generated from the Archon

Any of those would be stellar. A combination would be simply incredible.

Man, having the Archon get a negative LD debuff would be so great.
even if its only -1, stacking that with AoM and a Mask of Secrets would be so awesome!

I love the stormsurge formaiton! Small problem, I've never actually got to play it cos its "Apocolypse only". Ive sent multiple requests to GW to please remove this limitation but to no avail.

40K has already become apoc so why this asinine limitation???

I have no idea. (Although allowing that formation into a Freakshow would be horrendously destructive.)

40K is not only appoc, it is EPIC in 28mm scale. Especially if the rumors are true and they start releasing demon primarchs.

The chaos formation lists a restriction on what wargear the lord must take, ( terminator armor ) and he only has a 12" hatred bubble to models in his own formation as the entirety of the formation bonus.
Swap the armor for a husk blade and hatred for fear and boom, that is what we can expect IMO.
I so want to be wrong...

Does it make that big of a difference? after getting together a small group of DE you pretty much are forced to buy venoms/raiders.

Until the rules are leak we don't know.

That aside if you are just starting or need a few more of theses models, I priced it out as being a £14.5 savings for the UK if you consider the Archon tax on it (because you are buying a second HQ you want to use). If you actually wanted the Archon you are saving  £28.5 off the GW prices which you can often beat at other stores.

As a starting basis not really that bad as the only thing you are not going to use most likely is the Archon. 10 Warriors, buy 2 venoms to run them in, the Raider is still good for Grotesques, and Reavers are still useable, and maybe... I said maybe, the formation will be good.

I am hoping the Reavers and the Raider with the Archon all Deep Strike together, and (ooooooo) if the Reavers can charge after Deep Striking, that would be sweet!

Even if they cannot charge from Deep Strike, I hope there is an option for arriving Turn 1 (auto like Scalpel Squadron or on a 4+ like in Kauyon) or auto Deep Strike on Turn 2. I am telling you all, my Archon will be throwing the Aenimus Vitae first thing when he arrives!

They released rules for Angron in the White Dwarf, a few years back, so people could use him in First-War-For-Armageddon campaings. He was actually kind of meh.

You do realise you can run a 9 man Warrior squad right, then just join the Archon during deployment?

This is in USD and using GW website prices (I added together the parts then subtracted the cost of the Starter Boxes):
Adeptus Astartes Space Marines: ~$31.25 (The terminator captain comes with the rest of the terminator squad so cut price in half.)
Adeptus Mechanicus Skitarii: $56
Astra Militarum: $54
Craftworld Eldar: $38.50
Dark Eldar starter Set: $43.75
Militarum Tempestus: $54
Tau: ~$75 (the Ethreal you get is the same one you get with the Commander so I divided the cost in 2)

Hope that is enough of a sample. Notice that the two strongest armies are the worst deals.

Only way I see that happening would be if Groteques got a plastic sprew and they decided to give Haemunculi the ability to take Wracks as troops again as they could in the 5th edition codex.

There are enough Haemonculus, Wrack, and Grot formations in the Haemonculus Covens supplement. Also, if the Codex Marines didn't/don't get another box, then we can't expect to either.

I just wish the rules for the formation would leak already.

True, I wasn't saying it was likely, mostly pointing out that even if they thought about it they wouldn't do it while Grotesques are not plastic. We have had a couple box sets in the past that came and went, Wych Cult Shardstorm for example, but none of them have ever included grots and this will not change for box sets in the future as long as they remain finecast.
